Hello everyone. Lots of reading happening, and lots of stuff to share. The midweek update isn’t something that’ll happen everytime, hope you enjoy this list :)

  1. Visiting a mail sorting center in Bremen - From the blog of Postcrossing, something that I’m part of. You send and receive (delightful) postcards across the world! Try it out if you want a taste of everywhere :)
  2. Brian Eno Plays the Universe - Being a physics student interested in quantum-everything, I loved this! Brian Eno is a very fascinating artist, and he seems to know a healthy amount of things about how to put things together the way physicists do too.
  3. Demand Curve - my weekly dose of economics. Why is the Birkin Bag so hard to procure? How does Hermès guarantee quality for its customers and business for itself?
  4. The Strand Bookstore’s Book Quiz - Patti Smith worked here, and it’s a very cool place regardless. If you want to be employed, you have to take (and pass) a quiz on books. Wow.
  5. A Gathering of Giants - A beautiful photo essay on whales. Photos of whales! I was sold. Sharing more for the pictures than the words.
  6. The Middle of Things: Advice for Young Writers - Writing is not so easy, good advice is always welcome (I guess). Nice piece, made me feel happy, and slightly hopeful.
  7. What makes train travel such an antidote to life’s stresses? - YES! Somebody needed to write this. Personally, I love just sitting inside a train, even an urban commuter train and finishing off a novel in a single sitting.
‘I think the food equivalent [of the opposite view] would be “I don’t care what my food tastes like, I just want to stuff my face.” Can you imagine telling a famous chef that? Well, telling me “I don’t care about the journey and I just want to get there” is a bit like telling me that.’
  8. The Mystery of Carl Miller - Terrific essay.
What if your last name is just the word that comes after your first name?
  9. Logic, flavours, and finding old flavours in new foods - Great piece with lots of food, and finding logical connections between widely different cuisines. Gotta find ‘em all.
A great dish hits you like a Whip-It: There’s momentary elation, a brief ripple of pure pleasure in the spacetime continuum. That’s what I was chasing, that split second when someone tastes something so delicious that their conversation suddenly derails and they blurt out something guttural like they stubbed their toe.
  10. The Suit That Couldn’t Be Copied - Bespoke and Made to Measure are actually two different things. And much much more.

Have a good day!
